They are characterized by a systematic decrease in disc height and their dehydration, which leads to a decrease in the elasticity of their structures and an increase in the risk of their fracture under load. This causes the vertebrae to move closer together, which can result in compression of the nerve roots that run through them. When such changes occur in the lumbar region, compression of the fibers that form the sciatic nerve is possible and, accordingly, pain in the knee appears.
